Slingshot Weekly (7/16/25) | When The Tools No Longer Fit
Jul 16, 2025There’s a quiet frustration that creeps in when you’re chasing a dream, doing everything “right,” and still feel stuck.
But maybe it’s not about working harder or being more disciplined. Maybe it’s just this: the tools you’re using no longer fit the version of you that’s growing. And here’s the part we don’t say enough: That’s not bad. That’s progress.
Outgrowing your tools isn’t a sign of failure, it’s a signal that you’re evolving. That thing that used to work - it was a coping mechanism, a mindset, a morning routine, or even a role you used to play - isn’t meant to carry you forward forever. And that is COMPLETELY okay.
Think of it like this: a third grader doesn’t wear the same shoes in eighth grade. Well, sometimes that may be true (but not always). That’s not dramatic - it’s expected. But when it comes to our goals, we tend to shame ourselves for needing something new. We say, “I used to be so good at this,” or “Why can’t I just make this work?”
But maybe you were never meant to force it. Maybe your systems need a refresh. Maybe your structures need to be re-imagined. Maybe it’s time to re-shift. Rebuild. Rethink. We don’t often talk about this stage in dream-chasing - the awkward in-between when you know your old strategies are too small but the new ones haven’t fully clicked yet. But this is where transformation happens.
Olympic athletes don’t use the same training plans year after year. They adapt based on their season, their growth, their goals, and their wins or losses. Teachers don’t use the same lesson plan for every class. They shift based on the students in front of them. And you? You’re allowed to change how you show up for what matters.
So if you’re feeling off-track, don’t ask yourself, “What’s wrong with me?” Ask, “What tools have I outgrown?”
Maybe it’s a belief that rest equals laziness. Maybe it’s the habit of saying yes to everything. Maybe it’s a structure that helped you survive but won’t help you thrive. This isn't quitting. It's graduating. You’re allowed to evolve. In fact, you should.
Reflect On This:
- What’s one habit, mindset, or system you’ve been clinging to - not because it still works, but because it once did?
- What think should you re-shift, re-imagine, or re-frame that you never thought you had to?
- What new tool might you explore next?
