Slingshot Weekly (6/3/26) | Perspective Before Decision
Jun 03, 2026When people feel uncertain about their future, they often respond in one of two ways: they overthink it privately or they research it from a distance.
They scroll through social media. They search career websites. They compare job titles. They read descriptions of roles they have never seen and imagine paths they have never experienced. Research has value. Information matters. Eventually, there comes a point where more information stops creating clarity and starts creating noise.
You can only learn so much about a path from behind a screen. At some point, exploration becomes less about gathering information and more about gathering perspective. That is where meaningful conversations become powerful.
A conversation with someone who has actually lived the work you are curious about can provide insights that no website, article, or job description can fully capture. Not because they have all the answers, but because they have something far more valuable: experience.
They know what the work feels like on an ordinary Tuesday morning. They understand the parts people rarely advertise. They know the challenges, frustrations, and realities that come with the role. They can tell you what surprised them, what they enjoy, what they would change, and what they wish they had understood earlier.
A job title might sound exciting until you hear about the day-to-day responsibilities. A career path might seem overwhelming until someone explains how they got there one step at a time. Sometimes a conversation increases your interest. Other times, it helps you realize a path is not as aligned as you originally thought. However, both outcomes are valuable.
The goal is not to find someone who tells you exactly what to do with your life. The goal is to learn from someone who has already walked a version of the road you are considering.
As you listen, pay attention to your own reactions. Notice what captures your attention. Notice what raises new questions. Notice what excites you and what makes you hesitate. The conversation itself becomes a mirror. You begin to see your own interests, values, and priorities more clearly through the stories and experiences of others.
Too many people believe they have to figure everything out on their own. They put pressure on themselves to have the perfect plan before taking action. It grows through curiosity, connection, and conversation.
This week, challenge yourself to move beyond research alone. Reach out to someone whose work interests you. Ask questions. Listen carefully. Learn from their experience.
The clearest path forward is not found from deciding with certainty, it is found by borrowing perspective from someone who has already been where you are trying to go.
Reflection Questions of the Week:
- What questions do you have that cannot be answered through a website, social media profile, or online search?
- When was the last time a conversation changed your perspective on something important?
- What assumptions are you currently making about a career path that could be tested through a conversation?
