IDEAS Framework Phase 1: Introspection | the Winding Path

ideas framework phase 1 tools Sep 05, 2024

I always tell young people this work is not a path to singular discovery.  We’re not trying to find the one job they’re supposed to do.  Ultimately, we’re trying to get them to learn a process and a mindset.

The process is the IDEAS Framework.  Following the different phases of the framework gets them to learn more about themselves and how their unique skills and interests can apply to a possible job in an industry they love.  Then how to reach out to industry professionals to validate their ideas and build networks of people that can help them down their path.

The mindset is a little different.  It’s about changing the way they see their journey. It’s about embracing the adventure that unfolds over the next ten years (and really the rest of their life).  It’s the growth mindset described by Carol Dweck in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (as of now 16,315 5-star reviews on Amazon).

Dweck explains that a growth mindset is when a young person understands their abilities can be developed. This development happens as they encounter new experiences and learn and grow from them.  We call this the Winding Path.

At Slingshot, we define Winding Path as the time from 18 years old to about 28.  Over this time they’re having all sorts of experiences from new jobs, new bosses, influences from books, TikTok, YouTube, relationships and so much more.  They’re learning what they like and what they don’t.  What excites them and gives them life and what feels like a drag and not an experience they want to have again.  What work was fulfilling and meaningful and what just felt like…well…work.

All of these experiences are shaping them and helping them grow and change as long as they have that growth mindset and they’re open to the adventure.  This change of perspective can be incredibly valuable as they navigate the next 10 years.

Ultimately, we want them to give themselves some grace along this path.  They aren’t going to have it ALL figured out right away (if ever, really) and that’s ok.  But if they can embrace the adventure and recognize they’re honing in on their best self, then that’s the good stuff.  Because they’re worth it!!

If someone in your life needs a little help with the “Winding Path”, don’t hesitate to reach out and learn more about our different coaching options.  We’d love to help.
